I’ve been posting a lot about a common thing I see with the gals I coach, and felt it deeply myself. (follow me on IG if you don’t already!)
Feeling deeply BORED at work.
Zero enthusiasm, zero motivation, zero fulfillment and bingeing Emily in Paris and Bridgerton during the work day to help the time pass by. Not an ideal situation at all.
After work, in the daily debrief with my husband, I would say exactly those words “I’m so bored” as he listened patiently to me as I griped about my day. (Poor guy, but spoiler alert, he is bored too…)
Here’s the thing.
I knew there was more to it. It wasn’t the job itself.
I loved the discipline of marketing, and in the tech space, there was so much to do. My team was busy, I was busy.
There was plenty of work to do, and we were all doing it.
I had a great team of gals who I loved leading and mentoring as they were learning and growing in their respective roles.
I liked the company I worked for, but if I’m honest (and I am), I was frustrated with the leaderships lack of true strategy and direction because it deeply impacted the work my team could have been doing to really elevate the messages we were trying to get into market. Tough to have a honed marketing strategy when the company had a list of priorities as long as my arm.
I lacked the motivation to keep fighting for what I KNEW we should be doing. My arguments fell on deaf ears.
My boredom was a mask for what was really going on within me.
I had outgrown what I was good at… and I was reluctant to admit it to myself. (ringing any bells for you?)
SNAP.
Staying was easy.
I knew how to succeed there, as long as I didn’t try to rock the “no strategy, just reactivity” boat.
I knew the job inside and out. I loved my team.
And, I DREADED sitting at my desk because the only actual fulfillment, satisfaction, and joy I was getting out of my job was the coaching I was doing with my team.
And that wasn’t ENOUGH for me.
I could go on a whole tangent about determining what “enough” looks like, but I’ll save that for another post.
Making a decision to leave meant listening to myself and taking a risk to get completely out of my comfort zone.
That whole process took honesty, introspection, and the support of my own coach. (Yes, coaches need coaches!!)
If “bored” feels familiar to you, it might be pointing you somewhere important.
Maybe it’s time you pay attention to it.
You might just find yourself heading in a new direction, that will bring you more fulfillment, joy and happiness.
Reach out if you want some support and to gain some clarity around what is at the root of how you are feeling.
Don’t be bored… (you aren’t a little kid looking for something or someone to entertain you).
P.S. You know, an hour long session might just do the trick to get you thinking about your next small step towards having more joy in your life! Click, click!
